collecting ideas for my final major project and looking into artists for research and inspiration
In the beginning of this sketchbook, I researched many different artists, from online resources as well as in the library at college. From this I photocopied many different pages that interested me with techniques, ideas, colour schemes, patterns, textures, layouts etc that I then cut up and placed in my sketchbook, making sure to annotate each section as I went along, noting what I liked about it, interesting details and maybe how I could incorporate things like this into my own work.
One of the books that I took a lot of inspiration from was 'Spark' by Dirk Rudolph. His style to me was something fresh and new and unique, where he combined text, picture and font together as a whole and created something exciting and new. From this, I looked at how he would merge text together and how it affected the look/emotions in a piece of work.
(THE IDEA BEHIND MY RESEARCH WAS TO LOOK INTO ARTISTS AND STYLES THAT I COULD ADAPT INTO MY OWN WORK TO CAPTURE MY EXPLORATION OF LINKS WITHIN MAINLY MY FAMILY BUT ALSO FRIENDS TOO. I WANT TO DELVE INTO MY FAMILY AND THE SIMILARITIES WE SHARE AND WHAT CONNECTS US AND ANNOTATE/DEVELOP THIS VISUALLY. I STARTED OFF MY RESEARCH LOOKING TO GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ELEMENTS THAT COULD BE SEEN IN THE CONSTRUCTION FIELD AS THAT IS THE JOB FIELD THAT MY DAD AND BROTHER ARE IN, I WANTED TO EXPLORE THE SCIENTIFIC SIDE TO RELATE TO MY OTHER BROTHER WHO WORKS IN A SCIENTIFIC JOB AND SEE HOW I COULD LINK QUALITIES FROM THESE FIELDS INTO MY OWN WORK. SUCH AS THE ORGANISED, COMPOSED, CLEAN LOOK IN THE SCIENCE FIELD, TO THE HARSH, TOUGH, CONSTRUCTION FIELD AND HOW THIS WORKS IN CONTRAST TO WHAT MY MUM DOES; HOW STAYS AT HOME AND IS A VERY FRAGILE, DELICATE CHARACTER. VERY OPPOSITE TO THE CAREER FIELDS OF MY BROTHERS AND DAD. I WANT TO CAPTURE THESE LINKS PHYSICALLY AND EXHIBIT IT THROUGH A COLLECTION OF RECORDING METHODS SUCH AS DRAWINGS, PHOTOGRAPHY, ZINES, COLLAGES ETC.)
